APPENDIX E – MUNICIPAL POLICIESAPPENDIX E – MUNICIPAL POLICIES\11. Severe Weather Procedures

PURPOSE

Due to the City of Hillsboro’s geographic location, we are located in what is referred to as “tornado alley”. Because of the potential and probable occurrence of tornadic activity in this area, the following policy is hereby established.

When the National Weather Service, Marion County Sheriff’s Department, or media notifies authorized personnel that Marion County or the Hillsboro area is under a tornado warning, time and conditions permitting, an attempt will be made to notify the following by base operators of impending weather conditions:

1.    HCMC – 701 S. Main – 947-3114

2.    Parkside Homes – 200 Willow Road – 947-2301

3.    Unified School District 410 – 812 East “A” – 947-3981

4.    Tabor College – 400 S. Jefferson – 947-3121

5.    Country Haven Inn – 804 Western Heights – 947-2929

6.    Vogt’s Hometown Market – 600 Western Heights – 947-3125

7.    Others to be determined at a later date.

A written log will be kept.

When a member of the weather watch, sheriff’s office, police department, city crews, or public citizen reports a funnel cloud or tornado in the Hillsboro proximity, the take cover siren will be sounded. This is a continual up and down wailing until danger has passed. The police car will also be used to alert people if there is no electricity. If Base I operators are not at the city or scout house during this time of emergency, it will be the responsibility of the on-duty police officer to sound the siren.
