PURPOSE

Organization of Safety Committee

POLICY

City of Hillsboro has recognized the importance of an organized and managed safety committee as a valuable tool for use in preventing accidents. The safety committee will be made up of workers appointed to aid and advise management on matters of worker safety. Members will include the City Administrator, Assistant City Clerk, two department heads, and two members selected by the employees at large.

Chairman Responsibilities

The chairman of the committee should be chosen for qualities of leadership, interest in safety, and ability to get results.

Committee Responsibilities

The safety committee should hold regular monthly meetings at which recommendations, accidents, records, and program plans are discussed. The committee should make inspections of selected areas paying special attention to the committee aims chosen for that month.

The safety committee will not take away supervisors’ responsibility for safety and health, but will help them in their constant effort to prevent injuries and illnesses. The on-the-job experience of the committee members is valuable in determining hazardous conditions and methods of work, suggesting corrective measures and obtaining cooperation of all personnel. By observing, thinking and discussing, the committee provides the stimulation and suggestions necessary to maintain safe and healthful conditions and safe, healthy workers.

Members will serve three year terms and for a maximum of 2 consecutive terms.
